They are used to form the best hand combination. In Texas Holdem Poker each player receives 2 cards face down. There are five community cards, which are dealt down to the table. After the deal there is a betting round, after which three community cards are turned up. One more betting round follows. One more table card is flipped, followed by another round of betting. The last card is flipped, a final round if betting ensues, and finally a showdown in which players make their best hands using their two pocket cards and the table's five shared cards.
